I was browsing in a GEC booklet from 1939: "Steelclad mercury arc rectifiers". The attached photo says it was installed at Percy Road, near where I live in Finchley There is still a 33kV to 11kV sub on that site though it's mostly empty space.
A note elsewhere in the booklet says that 8 units, total 2000kW, were installed in the Borough of Finchley. Application was described as "general" rather than traction or industrial.
I wonder what could have needed 2MW of DC at 5300V.
Any ideas?
