Fiat dropping diesels and twin air

Fiat have dropped the 1.3 multijet diesel and the 875cc twin air in Pandas and 500. The Punto range has already been dropped so the old FIRE 1242 cc petrol engine is keeping these cars alive.
The 500x also will not have a diesel option.
Only professional vehicles will have diesels by 2021.

My info was slightly wrong, the diesel 1.3 has been withdrawn on the Panda but the Twin Air is still the unit used on 4x4 and Cross, all the remaining models have the 1.2. The 500 will be powered by the 1.2 with the 1.3 Diesels now stopped remaining stock of 500's with the Twin Air will be available till exhausted
The bigger 500's with the 1.3 multijet diesel will continue but will be phased out before Fiats deadline of 2021 which has already been brought back one year.

Their 1.3 Diesel was one of the lowest polluters but their commitment to very low polluting petrol engines is commendable, a new petrol engine the firefly, already used in Brazil is due to be released in Europe in just over a year.

Now Porsche are to cease making diesel cars. Anyway, it doesn't make sense to make cars with sporty pretensions having diesel engines.

Yes a diesel in a Porsche or Jaguar does seem rather out of kilter. Heard of petrol heads but not a diesel head!

I do like diesels - spontaneous ignition, followed by rate of burning as fast as fuel is squirted in, is so much more elegant than mucking about with little sparks, with combustion rate (or even detonation) just down to what the fuel/air blend 'feels like!'

I do have a Maserati diesel, I'm very pleased with it. V6 engine, smooth, goes like a rocket. If it's got enough grunt to spin the wheels, it's got enough - any more is just a waste!

Don't get me wrong I've had a good few diesels over the years but today with DPF's exhaust gas recirculation and other emission controlling devices they are far less reliable than diesels of say the 80's & 90's.
There has been a lot of research on petrol engines over the last few years and I think (I could be wrong) petrol engines could be the last vestige of the IC engine.
