Windows 7 boot problem

My main W7 PC crashed badly today. Possibly a power interruption. Anyway, it won't recognise the boot drive. A bit of research suggests the MBR may be corrupted. I had a look at the PC by booting an Ubuntu live CD and all the drives are still there, including the boot drive.

When i used a W7 instal CD to try to repair it said it was the wrong OS, so stuck. Downloaded an Ubuntu based MBR repair ISO, burned it to DVD and ran it. It claimed to have done a repair but I now get bootmgr is missing.

Currently trying the Aeomi PE builder tools that I hope will fix the broken MBR and bootmgr. I use and like Aeomi Backupper so keeping fingers crossed. I really want to avoid the hassle of a clean instal of W7. I won't lose any data as that's all on another HDD and well backed up too but it's a longish job to re-install all my software.

What I should have done is used Aeomi backupper to clone my C: drive every now and then. I clone the D drive with my data on it every week. Easy to be wise after event.

Nothing seemed to help so I'm doing a clean instal. A lot of hassle getting everything back how I want but at least I know it will work. Little annoyances include getting the highlighters right in the ConText text editor, remembering to kill the paperclip when re-installing Office 2000 and many more.

My own data is on a separate HDD (D: drive) which is well backed up so I won't lose anything.

When I've got it all working nicely I'll clone the C: drive and try to remember to do that occasionally.
