thanks Rob t and all other guys when I first looked into the player I noticed one of the yellow wires from the speaker unconnected and a yellow wire from the switch unconnected thinking this was a fault re connected them but it made no difference will take a look tomorrow with two 4.5 v batteries bob

It would only have been a PP11, if used for amplifier / radio only, as I think it was two sets of three layer cells (as used in PP9 and the largest layer HT packs) for parallel, series or centre tap. Though I could be wrong.

How does the player work? Is it separate motor battery or what?

The motor shares the same battery, an AD28 according to the R&TVS page

The pickup signal wire connects to the open end of a 220k resistor according to a schematic thumbnail on UKVRR, the screen would be connected to the B+ rail.

Then indeed as I suspected a PP9 would be a very bad idea, and if running/testing the player, then Alkaline D cells (not Energiser, Duracell, or Tesco, but cheaper) would be best. The AA cells could workout more expensive as they are very much higher internal resistance, apart from lower capacity, which would be greatly reduced in player mode.
