12 volt winch

Help required. A friend has had been given a 12 volt comeup winch, type DV 9000 similar, similar but not the same as seen on the front of Land rovers. Some one has disconnected all the thick cables and  copper links, to me its not obvious where they correctly fit. The motor which looks like a high capacity 4 pole, 4 brush, small lorry starter motor without a solenoid. The winch is controlled by two large solenoid/contactors operated via a remote controller.
Apparently these winches are made in USA  and Taiwan, I have emailed both and no reply. I phoned the agent and they told me all about H&S but nothing about the connections. Ted

Hi Ted, it sounds like a series connected DC motor. Does it have 3 or 4 leadout wires?
3 wire types you connect the common wire (usually A) and one or other of the field windings (sometimes f.ff or y.yy) for forward or reverse direction
4 wire types bring out both arm and field leads and a pair of changeover contactors are used.

These motors will also work well with transistorised speed controllers.

Many thanks for your reply Ed. I'm trying to fit the "loom" to its correct orientation if you see what I mean, without forcing any thing.Yes the motor is a series type and it is a 3450watt so quite a big one. I think they/him are hoping to drag a small fishing coble up the beach with it. Not seen the vehicle or battery and hope its got a large alternator. Ted

If it's a drum winch then don't forget that the rated line pull is usually given for a single layer of cable on the drum.

Buy proper Land Rover.
Attach Coble with substantial Rope.
Select Low Ratio.
Drive.


Seriously, those things take fearsome amounts of Current and can easily flatten and/or damage an ordinary Battery.

Hi, at nearly 3.5KW that is a seriously big motor. I would have expected less than 1KW with a nice low gear ratio.
Sounds as if it will need a transistorised controller to prevent the battery being caned.

Mind, if the ratings on these things are like audio, that will be the 1 min or 30 sec rating. 1 hour will be more like 1KW.
