Hi,

Just acquired a (mid 50s) Schneider TV which from the photo looks to be in good condition.
Will be picking it up on Sunday so will get a good look then.
A real bargain at 11€  or £8.49!
A bit of a trek as it is north of Limoges but it does mean that my wife can finally get to visit the porcelain museum on the way back.

I have noticed that it is rare to see French TV sets on Ebay.fr, there are a fair few radios  (ancienne radio) but not many old TVs (ancienne televisieur/tele).
Having looked at the radio museum site it looks as though it will be an 819 line set which means that I won't (when it is fixed) be able to get a proper picture as my Aurora is for 405 lines only.
I don't fancy buying another Aurora just so I can get a proper picture on this one and only non 405 line set.

But it will be fun to poke around in something new and hopefully get it going.

It is possible to reprogram an Aurora to different standards. Especially the later versions where the notch filter is in the xilinx. But it's not something you'd want to do all the time.

Hi Andy.
I've done a few 819 line sets and oddly enough the line timebases in them seem to be happy enough running 15,625hz. Well worth trying the set then on 625.

The picture above is of an 819 line Philips running 625.

It won't be a watchable picture but you can drive it from your 405 line Aurora when you first get it going - the 20.475kHz line frequency is very close to double the 405 line one (20.250kHz)

If you can find a suitable picture which only occupies one half of the line - either the first half or the second: NOT the centre! - you would even get a viewable picture!

You'll find French TVs are very well made and very heavy, all good stuff in them. The early 819 line sets are the best in as much they have the full video bandwidth, >10Mhz. Some of the later sets were restricted to about 7Mhz.

I still have a few 819 line sets here if anyone has the notion to experiment with one.

They would have been designed for use with the Belgian System F transmissions which shoe horned an 819 line signal into a 625 line channel!
The differences between the French system E and the Belgian system F are as follows (all figures in MHz):

System E: Channel width: 14  Vis. BW 10.4 Sound/vision spacing: ±11.15  VSB: 2 
System F: Channel width:   7  Vis. BW  5.0   Sound/vision spacing:   +5.5    VSB: 0.75

Any set designed for use in France would have to accommodate the 11.15MHz sound/vision spacing, so there would be no point in truncating the vision IF bandwidth.

I wonder how many sets, of any age, were capable of resolving the full 10.4MHz bandwidth?

This brings back memories of seeing two narrow (half 819-line) pictures side by side on a 405-line set during periods of abnormal reception in the 60s ...!

Hi Guys,

I may see if I can find a bit of space to have a go at this TV. I know where my tools, components and Aurora are so even though I don't have a workshop (until it is built!) I can still have a go and see if I can get the set going.

Will post again after I have picked up the set on Sunday.

Hi Terry.
Geordie is correct, many of the later French 819 line sets didn't have the full bandwidth, they were aligned for gain to reduce the component count. We know that the gain would be low due to the wide bandwidth so the early sets had three or even four stages of vision IF amplification to compensate.
I have had a few 819 line sets through my hands and the early sets definitely are better. I can reproduce a full bandwidth 819 line picture here and the difference is very marked between the later cut down sets with a very flat picture.
