Though I made the mistake of buying from eBay for a couple of quid extra because it was a UK seller who promised quick delivery, but actually, it was "drop-shipped" from China - perhaps even from Banggood...

It's in kit form, but it doesn't take long to assemble. Perversely, the cheaper ones are generally pre-built. Banggood also do cases for them.

I never especially enjoyed fixing the old ones that had a habit of repeatedly releasing the magic smoke. But designers have got very good at this game, and now they tend to wear out rather than blow up

Not 100% sure these are the same thing.

For £6 it seems hardly worth doing the assembly myself. Although in theory if it's under £18 it will come in without VAT while the ready built one won't. I don't mind the VAT but the £13.50 fee from RM or Parcelfarce is OTT for a small order.

Anyone with experience of orders from Banggood and VAT/fees?

They are different - the lack of a rotary encoder gives the game away. However, they are much of a muchness in all honesty - they all use the same code by that German chap, albeit with minor mods (and a variety of amusing smelling pistakes). Actually, the one I got is pretty good in that dept...

Can't comment on the VAT question, as I've only placed one or two small orders with them. If I remember, I can ask folk at work next week.
