HP Deskjet 940C Problems

Basically, I follow what you're saying, Mark, but, until a couple of days ago, the 940 would print such things as circuit diagrams perfectly clearly & legibly, until I tried to print one by clicking on a thumbnail in a post, which produced several pages of a manual, then, by further clicking on the wanted page, this appeared 'full size'.  However, when I tried to print it, the result was almost illegible, and further attempts at printing that diagram, or others, were little, if any, better, including one I have stored in 'my documents', which I've always been able to print perfectly before.

It does sound like something is not right with the printer. Question is: is it the hardware, or is it the printer driver? Or perhaps a bit of both

Did you have any joy getting to the Maintenance sections of the printer driver, as described above?

I followed the instructions in the maintenance section, and found that, despite trying four different Black Cartridges, all of which, AFAIK, are OK and contain ink, the machine indicated a Black Cartridge problem. The odd thing is that no colour is printed, yet the black portion of a document I tried printed OK. Also some parts of a test document which starts with the Alphabet in various sizes of font, are missing altogether. The machine has run OK with serial (USB) connection ever since I bought it (second hand) some years ago, but I decided to change to Parallel connection to see if that would cure the problems. Now, although it powers up OK, and the cartridge carriage moves as it should when the cover is opened, it won't print at all - i.e. nothing happens, when I select print, although the printer is 'installed & ready for use' Maybe I'll have to replace the printer after all!

Further to the above, I found that if I switched from 'HP Deskjet 940C (Copy1)' to HP Deskjet 940C series, I can now print clear legible copies of diagrams, etc., from downloads, but still cannot print from a full size copy of a circuit diagram obtained by clicking on a 'thumbnail'
Perhaps that's down to the resolution of the latter, although it's perfectly legible on screen! I once had a similar problem with trying to email documents from a Trust Combi Scanner, which I never solved.
