Really cross with myself!

I'm really cross that I let a Pye 39/JH slip through my fingers on ebay last night. I wasn't able to bid as I was travelling during the last couple of minutes!

I've been looking for one of these for ages!

Think of it as a lucky escape Rob - two RF stages, 11 wavebands with all the attendant rats' nest of wiring and switchery, plus it's humongous size. Nightmare! True, if it worked it would sound nice, with its push-pull output stage and large speaker, but understanding though she is, I think that if I brought anything like that home, Jennifer would chuck me out and change the locks!

Try to console yourself by imagining that it was riddled with woodworm. (Who knows - might have been!).

Its was a pickup only in Suffolk so I've also saved a fortune in fuel too.

Calm yourself, it's only got one rf stage, EF39.
The Output stage is two EL33s, and yes, it does sound splendid. With a decent Aerial it's at least as good as run-of-the-mill Comms receivers of that era. It's said that it's the last am set that was designed to actually be listened to, worldwide.
I've got a complete one and a chassis, plus the export version - P41? - without LW. The latter is sealed up in a box 'cause it was said to have woodworm. I must get it out and see now that it's had two hard winters. According to the Trader Sheet there's also an A39J/H with slightly different valves, but I've never come across one, yet.
By the way, it's 39J/H - oblique between the J and the H.

I've been in your situation with things on e-bay that I've had my eye on - and then missed - many a time. Perhaps console yourself that if you had made a bid, there is no way of knowing if you would have won it anyway. Besides, what you didn't spend on that item is all the more £ available for the next irresistible item that comes along; a bit like buses, really.

I had a weather eye on that one too. I drove to Southwold a couple of weeks ago and Beccles is near so I knew how long it would take but just didn't fancy the hassle in the end. Nice sets but I've got a PE80 now

Hi Andrew,
Sounds like we might have been in close vicinity as Angie and I spent a weekend in Southwold about the same time. Its one of our favourite place that we would like to retire to (money permitting).

I too have a PE80 and PE60 so I saw this as completing the set so to speak.
