1970s Singer sewing machine

looks the same type of mains cap that used to cause problems on mid 80's toshiba tv's and are used in a lot of microwaves but i have never seen one blown apart before

What sort of value X2 cap would be preferable? I have some 0.1uF and 0.22uF at 275v to hand.

Hi Rob, they are a simple circuit, but can create a lot of interference fron the brushes if not suppressed (and sometime when they are!).
The motor is basically a shunt wound 240v ac/dc machine with the armature and field commoned at one end to neutral. The other end of the field goes to mains L. The other end of the armature goes via the rheostatic foot pedal to mains L. The light is also wired in there as well. Note that the field winding is often energised at all times it is plugged in.

I've now fitted a 0.1uF 275 x2 cap and its working although the motor assembly now smells a wee bit burnt. Can I assume that this is the residual from the exploding Rifa cap that was previouslt fitted?

Hi Joe,
I left it on for a while with the light on. I've checked the motor etc - all appears fine but it does smell a lot.
