Best AM demodulator?

I think I'm having a bad morning and having trouble with the calculations but what happens to the other sideband when doing homodyne detection? One sideband is heterodyned to audio frquency range, the other to a negative frequency. Surely the -ve frequencies are going to cancel out the +ve ones. Or have I got my trig wrong and they actually add.

I thought that both sidebands contained the same frequencies.

Jeffrey, surely, if you were right, the same thing would happen with any form of detection?

The sidebands add together - hence the sloping response with carrier 6dB down to correct for vestigial sideband transmission in analogue TV signals.

Hi Steve thanks for the Tucker refs, from memory his articles in EE had comprehensive constructional details. I believe these were later updated in the WW article.

I can't access my library at present, but I think his design would marry well with a 3-3 amp.

Hmm seems to be that synchronous detection is best, but was not so easy in the valve/transistor days & that's why diode envelope detectors were used.... Just a thought: would a full wave bridge rectifier type detector sound any better than a single half wave diode one? Or not worth the extra 3 diodes?
