Why put a computer speaker in the Woodwork section?  Well there's nothing that can really be said about an LM386 as they are one of those wonderful devises that just work.  What interest there is in this job has been the case.

This was based on a photograph in an Bulletin a few years ago.  Scaling it down to 4" made the fret-work rather tricky but, for all that it's far from perfect, I don't think it's bad for a first attempt.

I think the one in the Bulletin might have been one that Gary restored, but can't be sure. I certainly recall seeing it.

Yes, the LM386 ranks alongside the 555 and 741 for longevity.

The little audio amp modules which use the SMD version of the 386 are still 'cheap as chips' at just £1.01 post free!

Yes!  I restored one and wrote two articles about it as eventually I found a scrap second with the correct speaker in it.  What a find, never play it but at least its original.

Another find was the exact edge beading that was broken and missing.  This was in an ancient timber yard now gone unfortunately.

Super speaker cloth Gary - as you say in the article, it looks like ripples on water, so was very apt.

Fretwork was of course extremely popular in the late 1800s early 1900s - Hobbies of Dereham being the largest manufacturer of fretwork machines in the world.  Their catalogues contained plans and kits for radios (or rather 'wirelesses' as they were then called) and speakers, using fretwork cabinets. Their 1929 catalogue had instructions and plans to build the 'Hobbies Three'. No doubt F.J. Camm had a hand in that - he was editor of the Hobbies Annual for some years from 1925. In later years, F.G. Rayer was behind many of the Hobbies Weekly radio designs.
