An interesting read, albeit quite a lot to take in. I wonder how many of those continental stations were audible in the UK in those days, given that many of them were 2kW or less. Somewhere I have an old Geography Book, and, on one of the flyleaves is a map showing the locations of 'Wireless Broadcasting Stations, alittle bit later, in the 1930s. No mention of Luxembourg, though. Did they not have a station in 1927/28, or was it the BBC's aversion to giving them any kind of publicity. I note how, even before 1927, the idea that Broadcasting should be a monopoly seemed to be entrenched in the minds of the authorities in this country.
From the frequencies listed it would seem that, on MW at least, 10kHz channel spacing was used back then. When, I wonder, was the 9kHz spacing adopted - in the 30s with the Lucerne Plan perhaps, or maybe not until the 1948 Copenhagen Plan?? Long Wave doesn't appear to have been defined in the 20s, with the Eifel tower on 2600M (115kHz) or therabouts, so presumably the 150 -290kHz band was standardised in one of the later Band Plans, too. A 'Guide to Broadcasting Stations' Book, which I bought back in the early 1960s, also showed some stations operating between about 300 & 450kHz. When did the use of that segment for broadcasting cease? |
