I agree, Steve. My Hacker Autocrat has got AF117s in and works fine with no bopping having been needed. I've also done a few R200s where one or two have had whiskers but not all of them despite being the same age and being stored in the same conditions.

I do wish someone would indicate how I could safely remove the handle without breaking the case - it seems a shame not to repair this.

I doubt that it can be removed without causing damage Rob, and I've attached some pics to explain why. Firstly, on the outside there is a plastic cap at each end which can't be removed without destroying it. When it has been removed, it's of no help at all in that it reveals what appears to be a large brass nut, but isn't. It's the outer part of a solid one-piece machined brass part, which I'll call a 'boss'. On the inside of the case, there is a groove in this part, onto which a spring clip is fitted, which isn't meant to come off. I don't know what these clips are called, but they're commonplace on old radios and domestic appliances.

If you are determined to remove that spring clip , you'd need to make a hooked right-angled forked tool which you could place either side of the spring as close the the brass 'boss' as you could, then lever the inner ends of the clip to release it so it could be sprung off. (At least, in theory). You do have the advantage that there is a steel plate against which you could lever to prise off the clip, so you wouldn't be levering directly against the cabinet.

This type of clip was often used to retain dials on radios and often on bakelite and plastic cabinets eg KB FB10 'Toaster' radio. Clearly a one-trip device which was for cheapness and speedy of assembly on products which were built down to a price - not up to a standard. Frankly, they would have been expected by the makers to have become landfill long ago, as indeed many have, having lasted well beyond their design life.

'Built in obsolescence' has been around a long time, and without it, technological progress would have been set back by decades.

Therein lies the challenge - it's our mission in life to turn the clock back!

(Remarkable that the TR82 only had MW and LW, long after VHF came into being, though the 'repro' one does have VHF).

Sorry it doesn't help too much but it might at least prevent you from doing further damage.

Yes, those Tinnerman clips were a pain, the round ones were even worse, we used to bend the rectangular ones inside out with a pair of thin nosed pliers and use packing washers and a circlip to effect a repair. Used a lot in tellies.

Actually its a lot easier to remove the handle on a TR82 than you think, I've changed handles and entire cases many times without a problem.

which is basically a rewritten version of my BVWS article on the subject, you will see that this series of radios became something of a collecting obsession with me for quite a while. I've completely dismantled, cleaned, and rebuilt a good few dozen.

First step is to remove the clear dial and the four screws holding the chassis to the case and take the chassis out.

You now have clear access to the bow-shaped clips retaining the handle. With a pair of sniped nosed pliers grab the clip and twist until the metal pops out of the groove in the brass spindle. Don't be afraid to use quite a bit of force here, they don't release easily.

Once the clip comes off, the rectangular plate beneath it can be removed and the spindle withdrawn. Repeat at the other side.

No doubt the clips will now be twisted out of shape. Just bend back into a bow shape with the pliers and they will be fine (trust me).

Reassembly involves reinserting the spindle and plate and pressing the clip back into place with your fingers until it reingages into the groove at both sides.

A word of caution when you've got the handle free. Do not bend in the middle of the plastic. It is a sure fire way of snapping the handle in two!

Thanks for that Robert, and of course for the original posts, which are the definitive - indeed, encyclopaedic - reference to this range of radios, which I, and I think many others, will not have realised just how extensive the range was, and over how many years the sets were in production, having evolved from valve sets.

So Rob, you've got your answer, and a note of caution about not twisting the handle and bending the plastic.

I shall follow your instructions to remove the handle.

The radio is working well, I've sprayed some deoxit in the pots and on the MW/LW switch and its sound fine. I've tapped (lightly) the AF117 - no noises at all. Once tuned its really good so I am loathe to touch anything component wise even with those horrible black Hunts caps - would you all agree??

With regard to crackles, the culprit is the air tuning cap. In certain positions its really crackly when being moved - any thoughts as it the only thing that needs to be put right.

After the VHF90 this one has been a real pleasure to work on.

Air tuning capactors have 2 main problems. Muck inside them and the plates touching. Look at it under a bright light and you should see where the problem is. In most cases a bit of judicious bending clears it...

Well done Steve - one of the plates was slightly bent which i have now straightened. No crackles at all and it sounds superb so apart from case cosmetics, I shall leave well alone.

I'll add to the restorations with pics shortly.
