I did slightly open the slot, Gary, and despite being a bit thin at the bottom they didn't break.

I've been wood-working today but will certainly explore other methods. These were done because I wanted a pair but more thought can go into the next ones.

Of course, the easiest way is to buy a load of steel split pins and bung 'em in cheapo home nickle/chrome plating kit....

Very well done Joe and what a nice little project. The wooden overcoats are a neat touch with the wire burning to add decoration.

Thanks Gary; yes I could come up with something to produce these in bulk but for speed I think Big Al is on the right track and I would possibly chuck a very thin slitting saw in the lathe then make a jig to hold the blanks in the tool post.

I can split a line using a 12" hacksaw but I detest junior hacksaws as their blades always end up distorting. If I was going to cut the slots in brass by hand I think I would use a very fine piercing saw blade in a coping saw frame; I've had some practice of this whilst cutting out brass nameplates.

Incidentally, they are still available (Farnell 317 093 and 317-100) though they're a bit expensive.
