Hello Rob, have you tried substituting the UL84 for a good known one,
A small heater-cathode leak in a tired valve would produce some background hum.

To me the radio radiating back to itself is a lot more plausible than the mains lead picking up strong stations that some how mysteriously enter the set.

Guess its time for a serach on the web!

Good luck searching on the web Gary, I tried but gave up after an hour or so, couldn't find anything conclusive as to an actual single source of modulation hum, maybe it is a case of both ie: radiation from within the receiver radiating back to itself and/or pickup by the mains.

Hi All,
The set is working perfectly and I've added a suppressor cap too. I put a plug with a 3amp fuse on it and we were listening to it in the lounge.
It was really worth the effort at it is an excellent sounding set. I really didn't want to give it away in the end. But......tada....I've started on the next Ivory Bush VHF90 I have.

only 2 more to go after this but I do have a feel that there will be a break to do something else in between.

Well at least you've got one to scan Rob, and as there isn't any white lettering, just red on a gold background, it might lend itself to a waterslide ransfer (AKA 'decal').

You probably know about 'Crafty Computer Paper' who supply decal paper for both inkjet and laser printers, but if not, you'll find it at this link, with a demo video you can watch as to how to make and apply the transfers. You will of course have to apply the transfer to the rear of the dial, so will need to reverse the scan on your PC or the lettering will appear backwards. (As with 'Press 'n Peel' PCB paper!).

Your dial looks as though it might be acrylic, in which case you can no doubt cut it to size and drill it yourself from standard DIY glazing sheet, but if not, a local glass supplier will cut, shape and drill the glass for you, but I guess you'll want to get the chassis restored and working first.
