Metadata on CDs

I put a CD in the car's CD player today and to my surprise saw track names and other metadata on the display. I have never seen this before with a CD and though that the "red book" spec for CDs precluded metadata apart from the PQ codes. The car is not connected to the internet in any way so it could not have found out by using online lookup services.

My understanding is that when the CD format was designed the need for metadata wasn't foreseen and couldn't readily be added.

Probably CD-Text, introduced in the mid-1990s...

Yes it's CD text.
It was out about a year before I left Sony. Some of the minidisc head units would display it when connected to a 6 CD disc changer.

Thanks. That sounds likely. I didn't know there was any scheme for CD metadata that was red book compatible.

It's not something I'd seen either, until a few months ago when a Philips CDR-770 with recording capability, near mint from the local Sue Ryder shop, joined the household system.
