Hello everyone,
Just a quick thank you for all the advice and help.
Once I have the right capacitor and soldered it in, and the other one, I shall announce the reults.
I was into my wife's little radio that she listens to in bed and found that it too was making pretty unpleasant noises on the LW band.
This leads me to suspect that the P35's brand of LW noise is a obiquitous phenomenon and as someone suggested, likely due to AC interference.
I have re-learned a lot since embarking on this daring enterprise to improve a friend's non-functioning P35 - all thanks to contact with yourselves. It took me back to making and selling one-valve sets (we were very close to Burghead mast, so you could get anything to work - even connecting earphones to the fence wires.)
