Apparently this was started by the large Christmas tree and its lights in the hotel lobby. The oily nature of pine trees and the fully wood paneled lobby didn't help.

That's bad Peter.
A very sad outcome no doubt caused by old mains fed bulbs. Just needs a bad connection or one to shatter and then you have a fire in the offing.

Just be glad we don't use candles on xmas trees any more. Well most of us don't. A cousin of mine's wife insisted on using real candles and they nearly lost their house a few years ago.
