SILICONE insulated test lead wire is also special in that it has a high number of fine strands, so not only is it well insulated and resistant to burns from your soldering iron, but it's ultra-flexible (without fracturing) and low resistance.
Some years ago I made up a load of test bench cables using this stuff but never found decent probes other than those from Pomona. Even finding good croc clips is a challenge.
All probes are moulded for good reasons, though I suspect you could make some with pogo pins and some hollow POM Delrin rod...
