Lissen 8114 / Pye T10

Hello All,
Just finished the restoration of this fine old wireless. I bought it at an auction house and when I got it home & took the back off it looked sort of familiar to me. Looking at all my previous sets it turns out to be identical apart form the cabinet and dial to the Pye T10.
I have no idea what the connection between Pye & Lissen was? They are both very good well made sets and were easy to re cap' with most of the capacitors in two metal potted boxes. Full details of the layout of the capactor boxes was included in both the Pye & Lissen data sheets so I just made new boxes as it looked like a very messy job to melt out the old ones (Bitumen filled).
Cabinet just needed a rub over with some wax polish and set is playing well on all wavebands & the tuneon even works.
Now all I have to do is persuade SWMBO to let me put it in the sitting room.

Ever Ready took control of Lissen in 1928
The Lissen  MD stayed on and fell out with them when it was found he'd bought Burndept and launched Vidor (1934?)
So in 1935 Ever Ready brought out many new models, these and others till 1941 were also sold in different cabinets under the Lissen brand.
Pye was involved, certainly produced the metal work of the chassis till maybe 1938 and many Lissen/Ever Ready models very similar designs either due to using same valves or actually same design.
I don't know how much of the chassis was Pye assembled.
Someone mentioned that Pye was involved in one of the London factories of Ever Ready.
All this ended with the Blitz, though the last Pye Chassis/Metal work seems to have been 1938.

The Ever Ready Models A, D and G based on 1939 Ever Ready / Lissen. Only the All Dry Portable (later as Model A) was made after 1941.

An amazing number of models of big mains Lissen/Ever Ready 1935 to 1940 and even giant radiograms, considering the motivation was to sell batteries!

I'd love a full photocopy or scan of the Dictron's Oct/Nov 1989 Pye story in some magazine. I have a couple of pages of them identifying some models same chassis (or metal work) as Pye.
I put a table on the Radio museum of all Lissen - Ever Ready I could identify. You can't go by scale and knob layout as sometimes they added metal plates to reposition two knobs and changed the position  & style of speaker vs scale.
Ever Ready bought Mullard valves and re-labelled them, Pye seems to have strangely bought valves from Ever Ready at times!

At least one Pye / Ever Ready / Lissen model is Mazda or M.O., I forget.


It looks fabulous and I'm jealous. My Ever Ready 5017 looks very beat up in comparison!

There may be mistakes!

They tended to have a new Lissen cabinet design and have an AC only, an AC/DC and Battery version chassis for same cabinet. Then a variation of cabinet for Ever Ready. The design of the AC, AC/DC and Battery chassis (TRF, normal superhet, short superhet etc) would be similar but differing mainly in valve type, heater wiring and PSU. Radiograms always used an AC only Radio chassis sold separately and could come in different styles of Manual. Auto changers might take mixed sizes or one size only.   The battery chassis might be reused as a portable as well as alternate to AC or AC/DC chassis in same table cabinet. There are a few "real" attempts at portables before the "All Dry" that use gel type accumulators and specially designed chassis.

The lists above are not ALL Lissen and Ever Ready, but the 1935 to 1940 models excluding variations for Forces Entertainment as they are just a variation of Lissen 8514 / Ever Ready 5214.  

So make comments and we can then produce final equivalent tables for public consumption!

Paul King (guest from UK) has sent me an extract of Oct 1989 Radiophile by the late "Dictron". He is concerned with identifying Pye Chassis (the basic chassis 1935 to 1938 of many is by Pye) so "lumps" more together, while I am trying for more exact matches. He had a couple I missed and I have a few he missed! The above is updated somewhat.

He is approaching it from the actual "metalwork" aspect of the chassis, so both his E-R1 and E-R2 groups are mix of AC, AC/DC and Battery sets. I had in fact realised already that not only is same case in a particular year offered with all three options but that chassis layout can be the same. However, for my purposes they are different sets!

Similarly he "lumps" grams and table models and even versions with different valve line up a year later etc!

I'm not matching "similar" but simply 1:1 rebadging.

So the differences only, not the whole list!

I'm NOT matching models that are simply same chassis, but that are same shape /style of cabinet, radio, radio with presets, year, manual gram and auto-gram.

There are MANY lissen / Ever Ready that are same chassis with tiny variation a year later, or in three cabinet styles and both kinds of gram in the same year.

Hence the Radio book I'm working on covering 1922 -1992, or whatever, maybe 1898 to to 1998, will concentrate on Battery Radio, Ever Ready, Lissen, BEREC, Burndept, Vidor with incidental Pye, Philips, Cossor (one model same chassis as Ever Ready Model C), Plessey, EMI, RCA (Plessey maybe made the 1946-47 Model B, which was identical to EMI's Marconi personal and based on 1941 RCA's Personal.). Philips took over Mullard in 1928 and Pye in maybe 1967?

Curiously Ever Ready bought part of Burndept when Vidor effectively ceased radio and Batteries eaten by Compton.

Hi all,
and thank you for the information & compliments. Lissen certainly produced some quantity of sets. I had no idea they were so prolific. The cabinet of the Pye set is (In my opinion), not as stylish as the Lissen. They both feature the Tuneon tuning indicator, The one on the Pye was tired but the Lissen indicator looks unused and works a treat. I suspect it has not been connected for a while because when I removed the chassis the wires to the Tuneon were trapped under the edge of the chassis and the insulation cut through.
All sorted now and listening to radio 4 Medium wave. Only the two useful radio stations on AM here now, radio 4 & radio 5. Radio Newcastle has a medium wave station here but the signal is rubbish and at night is drowned out by all kinds of crudd.
When it gets too bad I power up my pantry transmitter and re transmit Classic FM.
