Casting from Samsung phone to TV

I'm a complete newcomer to this so I googled a bit. I understand you can buy a gadget called a Chromecast that will allow you to take anything displayed on an Android device and show it on your TV. The TV needs to have an HDMI port - mine does. They say that you need Android 4.4.1 or higher to make it work but I have a Samsung S3 which is Android 4.3. There are some reports of this working. I also have abrand new shiny Samsung tablet so that ought to be OK.
