The heating effect is down to magnetic hysteresis and will work with any ferromagnetic material, which excludes some grades of stainless steel. I've got the big version: a 2.5kW induction hob that can boil a panful of water in a couple of minutes but with the controlability of gas. However I have cookware with ferromagnetic bases designed for induction hobs . Most stainless steel cookware won't work, aluminium or copper a definite no unless the item has a ferromagnetic insert in the base.
The hob won't switch on should an unsuitable utensil be tried.
