There's been a lot of news recently about tumble dryer safety and quite a few fires have been reported.

I don't have a dryer but I understand the basic cause is lint building up on the heating element. All dryers have a lint filter which you're meant to clean regualrly to stop stuff building up on the element.
So what's the real problem with these Whirlpool etc dryers that need to be fixed?
