It's ok reading about it but a picture is worth a thousand words, here is an old time lecture/demo from Bell Labs, covers waves, impedance mismatch and matching, swr, 1/4 wave matching and delta match, all in a real time physical form so you can actually see what's going on. Worth a look.

I can remember one of those devices being used by our lecturer when I did my ONC & HNC in the mid-60s. A lot of the lab demonstrator equipment was built on a similar basis, and each piece probably only came out once in each college year. Still, equipment like that plus the hand used to designate field, current and movement for electric motors, stays in memory for ever. "A demonstration is worth a thousand pictures and a picture is worth a thousand words" - as the saying goes.

Nostalgia ain't what it used to be.
