Capacitors for restuffing

These look very useful indeed for those whom want to keep an original can in place as they are only 10mm in diameter. They should fit side by side in the old can.
The catch is that they are not available until 28/12/2013.

First thing I checked was the 100Hz ripple rating to see if it was adequate, given the small size. Very impressive - ranging from 380mA for 15uF to 960mA at 47uF. Well beyond anything we're ever likely to encounter. Not only that, at just £1.60 each (+ VAT etc), they're bargain basement prices! Even cheaper in bulk. What's not to like?

Whoops! that rating is at 100 KHz David. At 120Hz they are rated at 190 and 480 mA.

Still enough for most radios drawing say 50 mA HT using the old rule of thumb of X2 factor.

I wouldnt use them myself, just old fashioned I guess. Bigger impresses me, I bought three AL-Elko, German, 8 mF at 500V for the AK I'm doing from the BVWS. They are 50mm tall by 25mm dia. Should be good for a long long time.

I have quite a cramped chassis to do and drilling and stuffing is attractive due to top side access.
Even the far east copies outlast the diodes in some flat screen TV PSUs.

I'm not saying there is anything wrong with those caps, on paper the specs look fine and as you say there small size makes for a different way of re-stuffing.

But for the radio I'm doing the cans are 1 1/4" dia by about 5" high and the BVWS ones seem more appropriate: they please me anyway.

I like the idea of just drilling the bung and leaving the can intact so that the only sign they have been worked on is under the chassis.

So it is. Careless of me - I'd assumed the two columns were based on the ripple from a full wave rectifier at either 50 Hz or 60 Hz AC mains. Ideal for multi-section caps. Sometimes it's possible to stuff two caps in a can, but many cans are small and have three sections. I'm amazed that they can get sufficient capacitance in such a small package, with dielectric strong enough for high voltage ratings and ripple current. As I have few radios that are of any great value, so I'd have no qualms at using these. Time moves on and no doubt they're infinitely more reliable than the originals. (Ideal for little sets such as the Pye R33 etc).

Yes, that's a Tripple in a not very big can. Mine's humming a bit now so might well be a candidate.
