Yes, the parrot was a 'Norwegian Blue' and according to the shopkeeper it wasn't dead - it was clapped out after a long flight.
Well my magic eye is a 'Russian Green' EM80 and I'm happy to report that having built the little test circuit, it appears to be in rude health, which means that the Pye Fenman is not - leastways, not in the 'magic eye department' so I'll have to take a closer look. I've attached a few pics of the tester I made from the circuit I posted earlier. One pic of the display is with 0V on the grid, the other is with -1.5V on the grid, to simulate the action of AGC.
Ho hum.
The little round container is a 1.5V U11 battery to switch in minus 1.5V on the grid. The pics of the display may look very similar but the first is with 0V on the grid - the second with minus 1.5 V. It wouldn't be much trouble to add other valve-holders wired to suit other magic eyes, not that testing them is a frequent occurrence.
