This enchanting 15 minute video should appeal to some forum members, especially, I guess, to Lawrence and Colin ('Retired'), who is rather partial to 'big boys toys' but if Rob ('Bushbaby') spots it, I think he'll need to view it from behind the sofa! Will be of interest to those who like to see (from a safe distance!), things powered by steam, or for that matter, who like old dogs or sturdy girls! Well, the big bandsaws and planers take me back.....cutting all them short bits reminds me of cutting pallet wood from sawlogs, we had to cut various lengths but the most frequent was 540 mm long, a number forever etched on my brain!
We used to get paid £160 per cubic meter sawn, crosscut, stacked and banded on pallets. We used to buy the sawlogs in at around £22 per cubic meter in the round, the waste from offcuts, sawdust etc was around 50% so at the end of the day not a lot of money for the work but our kids needed feeding so needs must.
I like the steam engine in that setup, I guess if the operator fell into it he would be.....chuffed to bits....

Yes, strangely enough our old sawmill cat used to do the same as did the dog, as did the operator (occasionally!) the large bandsaw sounded about the right speed as well, around 600 - 700 rpm. We still had line shafts in place in the mill at the tin mine when I worked there.

In one of my brighter moments I considerd getting a steam engine to power the sawmill, when I worked it all out I think maybe I would burn more wood than I can saw.... In the end I settled for an old Perkins diesel to power the bandsaw with via a gearbox, it did ok, I think in the end there was more sawdust in the sump than oil.....
