An earlier version is in the same publication, 36th. edition 1959: p.119 - p.123.
I've got an older version of the ARRL from 1960 37th ed p115 to 118
and the pictures are different, interesting that they bothered to change them.
At the end of the day it's a 6 valver really.

Well I suppose it is on the inside but on the outside it's a 3 valve job...
It could be altered by using 2 pentagrids and a high gain pentode such as a E55L or something similar, that would make it a 3 valver which ever way you look at it.
