Well, started in earnest on this today, the mains TX was loose, on one side it only needed tightening, the other side had the securing
nut missing, so a replacement was found in the "spare nut" tin which sorted the problem out, the TX measured fine on the primary and secondary, so no more problems there.

bypass capacitor changed, most of the other caps measure fine on the ESR meter, wave-change switch cleaned, then cleaned again for luck, all assembled and connected up via lamp limiter and...............................silence.

gave it a good few minutes to warm up, and still nothing, not even a crackle or click when the controls were operated, so switched the limiter out, and observed, to be rewarded about 30 seconds later with a little light show dancing around underneath the front of the chassis.

So dismantled again, and on inspection, found the B9A valve base under the EL84 output valve had been tracking, between pin 7 (anode) and the centre post, which is earthed, also tracking to pin 6 and 8, so looks like a trip up into the loft tomorrow to find a valve base, and take it from there.

will also check the output TX, and replace the EL84.

Good man Fred, no scatter gun changing but testing of them thar caps and fault finding the problem!

Sorry for the dumb question - where is the volume control? I notice the front panel has band select, bass, treble, and tuning.

It's on the right of the cabinet John, if you look at picture no 4 of the first posting, you can just make out the volume knob
spring clip to the left of the mains TX
