That's well-timed, Col. I'm having a pie for my dinner so the oven will be hot and the transformer can stand in the empty foil dish afterwards. It looks like it's had pitch painted on rather than being dipped leaving a thick layer so it shouldn't be too bad. It's no earthly use like it is and I haven't any specific need for it so it seems like a good practise piece.

Wonderful stuff Col. As you know I also like doing the cabinet work so it's a joy to see the way this one turned out. I've also been thinking about re-wiring transformers so any suggestions on the best setup for re-winding them would be most appreciated. I'm familiar with coil winders for guitar pickups but not OPT's or mains transformers. That chassis certainly looks like it will take some cleaning up. Can't wait to see the fininshed set!

I've since seen your stripped transformer Joe and it's come up nice and clean after being baked and scrubbed; well done so far; now for the hard part in re-winding it.

Many thanks John for your kind comments. Yes the cabinet came up well in the end but I know you also achieve similar results and I hope between us and others who like to restore "Woody" cabinets that we can encourage others to have a go; the end result is well worth the effort put in.

At the moment I'm up to my neck in lathe restorations (two) and fear these are going to turn into a saga as there is a lot of work required on each of them. I'm currently hand scraping the paint from the beds then hopefully early next week they go to be re-ground. I might add the story onto the forum as work in progress.

Once I settle down a bit I'll also try to add a few notes on transformer winding.

I'd like to spend a lot more time on the forum as I keep missing things but being retired is a full time job with masses of overtime.

i would love a post on tx rewinds i still have an op tx from a rogers cadet with an open primary it was cheeper to get two made
than get the one rewound
two txs made to my specs cost £63 quote for rewind £97!

Many thanks Alan for your kind comments. I'm certainly not an expert on transformer or coil winding but I get by and still hope to add a thread covering the subject for novices. I've already made a start on the thread Rob but it is time consuming as I find putting a story together much easier as work in progress then I can take notes.

I like restoring woody cabinets but have not touched one for ages due to other more pressing jobs occupying my time. I have however sold quite a few of my radio collection to make some working space in the workshop but this space quickly filled with decorating materials and as the decorating is now finished for the time being I want to clear the space once again. The weather is dire as usual and still a black hole draining my enthusiasm for trips into the garage.
