When I got this radio I quickly discovered that it didn't do anything on VHF. As the tuning needle wasn't moving the drive mechanism was obviously at least part of the problem and given their reputation I was in no rush to tackle it.
I finally did last week and found the dial cord tangled around the pulley. I was getting it sorted out nicely until it snapped.
At least I could now turn the gang and when I discovered that VHF worked it seemed worth the effort of at lest attempting the re-string.
Luckily I'd got a long enough piece to replace it with and I managed it, though it did take two hours.
I changed the big tar capacitors and the only other thing I found of concern was a resistor on the cathode of one of the VHF valves which was high. Changing that improved VHF and swapping the two EF80s around made it really good.
The internal VHF aerial was missing but a bit of wire has made a perfectly serviceable replacement.
It had been fitted with an 8Ω Goodman's speaker. This is a foam edged thing and the foam is getting well and truly passed it so it won't last much longer. In the interim I've put a 5.6Ω resistor across it which has made very little difference to the available volume.
