Finally discovered a local (Southend-On-Sea) engineering company
willing to have a go with this. However they specialise in microphones so I'm still
working my way up a very long queue!

Happy eventual end to the story.
The failed cap must have caused/facilitated a spike that took out the laser.
I was lucky that the engineer had 3 NOS laser units in stock......because only one of
them functioned!

Normal service has been resumed.
