Odd file opening problem

On my PCs I assign iamage files to be opened by Irfanview. For the most part this works OK but when I connect my Samsung S3 phone and double click on an image file it opens with Windows photo viewer. Right click on file and select "open" and it opens in Irfanview. There's a "preview" option in the right click menu which opens the file in Windows photo viewer. The file icon is Irfanview's "splatted cat".

Any idea how to fix this so it works sensibly?

I wonder if it might be the various suffices .jpg, .JPG .Jpeg etc are not all explicitly linked to Irfanview?

Maybe the explicit linking is only registered for internal or memory devices drives, and external device handling is governed more directly by a seperate handler?

All image formats are explicitly linked to Irfanview. The problem seems to be that the default on double clicking an image on my phone is "preview" which goes to the Microsft viewer. Right click and select "open" and it opens in Irfanview. On image files elsewhere the default for double click is "open". I've just looked on the right click menu and there is a preview option. Which opens the file in the microsft viewer.

That box is pre-ticked by default. I've just ticked the one below it: Add Irfanview as application for USB events (scanner, digital camera etc) I'll see what happens when I next connect the camera.
