Yagi antenna discovered on S. Durham moorland.

     Here is the picture of an aerial which I discovered out on the South Durham Moors on Sunday.   The aerial is pointing in a South-South-East direction.  One suggestion it's an installation for air quality analysis. What is certain it quite an old site. No indication to which agency owns it.
The location is about three miles south of Westgate in Weardale on a single track road which leads to High Force near Middleton-Teesdale in Co Durham.  Google maps will find it for you. Site is served by a layby for vehicle parking.
Rough single track road, not suitable for sports cars.

Hi David, possibly telemetry for water resources, the entrance and size of the antenna would rule out a secret Gov bunker!

I've seen many similar antennae on utility installations. Presumably for telemetry. They yagis always look as if they're well made, definitely a cut above domestic TV aerials.

Most likely for telemetry  transmission from adjacent water services reservoir.

Well, you can use Google maps to find it but it takes a while!

I don't know how long it's been there but it was definitely there in May 2009 - Google obviously don't get along there very often!

It looks like there are plenty of excavator operators up there and they are just waiting for someone to ask them who paid them to install the equipment. They are about half a mile in each direction on the streetview.

It looks to me as if they are installing new cattle grids but you cold always nip back in your Tardis and ask them!
