I have tidied it up quite a lot now. The flexible white wire has been re-routed underneath the board for neatness. An aerial socket has been fitted, and I settled for two 10pF capacitors across the coil. By pushing the .0047uF capacitor to one side improved the performance quite a lot and it now gets three stations. A steel rod now works better that the brass one for tuning. I finally got round to measuring the anode current, and it is a mere 0.3mA!

This is how it stands at the moment.   The red socket in the middle is for the rod aerial.   The new coil is in position, and  it is all working.    The next task is to put LT and HT terminals in, rather than have three of the power leads going in direct.   I have discovered that it works best when tuned by a 1/8th inch steel rod inserted in the coil.
