I downloaded the "stand alone" exercutable file rather than the "installer" version and it is indeed that.  When you click the desk top icon it comes up as a "Do you want to run this file" but what I don't understand is how it works if its not running as a background utility.

When you first run it does it change settings in the Registry so that W10 cant do nasties in the background?

I'll say it again - Windows 10 is a sensible, free, upgrade (and it really is an upgrade). The upgrade process is pretty painless and at some point you really really should go there, mainly for security reasons.

Windows 7 and 8 are deprecated for a reason - architecturally they have too large an attack surface - basically, they are more vulnerable to hackers etc. than newer architectures.

If I were you, I'd just do it. You might have a small amount of inconvenience, but for the vast majority the process is pretty painless.

Maybe you are right. I have new drivers for the USB ports so it may actually work this time. Loath to do it though as the PC is working fine and have so many things I would rather do than play around with than the PC.

Do you know anyone who forked out for the software? Is that better and finds the correct drivers, if needed, like W7 did from a DVD.

But if you could answer the question of how the .EXE works in GWX Control Panel versus the "Installer" version I would appreciated it.
