8.15 pm, there's a fair few on 80 and 40 and a couple on 60 (both GB, one is a portable) top band is dead.

I'm sure you are up to it John. The Editor, Carl, is very helpful and friendly and does a great job with the layout and pictures. Be sure to shoot the pics at a good resolution as the Bulletin is top magazine quality.

Certainly if you would like me to 'proof' an article for you first that's fine by me. I have someone who proofs for me and vice versa. Its amazing what is picked up as unclear but was OK to the writer.

Copy is always scarce ... every scrap or small project can be knocked into shape and fill a few pages.

I have a big article, part written (top tip: write it as you go along, better than a journal) that may make the Christmas edition. As I have mentioned on other threads everything radio has stopped for house improvements. I almost welcome winter as then I do no DIY and just get down to the hobbies.

Cheers and do contribute ... once you have done one it may start you off doing more. I think it adds a lot to the hobby and stops doing sloppy work if you are going to photograph it and write about it honestly.

Most certainly! Nothing quite like doing a write-up for close examination by one's peers to motivate a man into making that extra bit of effort!

As much pressure as you want to make it John. You must have read articles where someone was a beginner or aimed for a low standard (to me now anyway). An example would be not re-stuffing the caps under the chassis. I have had feedback saying "why bother, no ones going to see it" and the only answer I could give was that "I see it and that's the way I like it to look when I'm done". Maybe no one will look under there for 50 years but I kinda hope they will be impressed when they do.

All I'm saying is if you write about it and take pictures and do it warts and all it seems to make you want to raise the standard of the restoration or the build of what ever you are making. Obviously, if you are developing something it may get cut about and chopped and re-hashed a few times and that to me is expected in the article.

Anyway do give it a try: I think you will find it adds a new facet to the hobby.

And not just beginners or others aiming (deliberately or otherwise) at a low standard. I'm sure that we have all seen examples of mass-manufactured items, the internal construction of which leaves a great deal to be desired. That can often be justified (by the makers) on the grounds of cost-competitiveness. What - in my humble opinion - is not acceptable are the standards of assembly which I have seen in many examples of so-called 'professional' equipment, cost of which can run into many hundreds of pounds. Usually, my main gripe in such cases is what appears to have been a deliberate policy of making maintenance as difficult as possible, or even downright impossible. I shan't mention any specific names (no names, no pack drill) but I am sure many readers will know the firms I have in mind, especially in the field of test equipment.

During the various development stages of a design, yes, but by the final design is decided upon, then that is the time to present a tidy, well-constructed and properly laid-out product, taking as many factors that constitute good design into consideration. Elsewhere here, on this Forum, I have presented my design for an all-semiconductor HV PSU. I am not saying that my completed article ticks all and every 'good design' box, (I am not a professional design engineer), but I would never have shown the many lash-ups that were built in the development process: there would be no point in doing that.
