Acoustic Solutions 26 in LCD Television

Hello, I managed to pick this up from Ebay this week, and being the only bidder I managed to secure it for only 10 beer tokens, complete with stand, manual and remote.

   

The seller described it as thus :

just wouldn't turn on one day lights up in standby when you click power nothing and you have to pull the cable out to reset the standby

Now I have come across this problem before so after getting it home, I decided to whip off the back to investigate, as prior to bidding I did some research and sure enough it contained a Vestel 17PW20-32 pcb which I have worked on a few times before, and is quite common in a lot of plasma and lcd tv sets.

   

So on visual inspection, the usual suspect capacitors stood out, sitting there like little balloons in the 3.3 volt standby supply line, now if high esr or low voltage drags the supply below 2.3 volts, the board fails a self test I believe, which causes shutdown or in this case to stay at standby.

   

A little trick I have learnt is to give the caps a blast of high heat from a hairdryer for a couple of minutes, and this sometimes will enable the tv to fire up to confirm the problem, which was the result so confirming the problem.

So after a trip to maplins, I replaced the three leaky caps, substituting 6V3 for 16V as they were the nearest rating they had in stock, total cost £2.68.

   

Refitted the panel back into the tv, powered up, pressed standby and the tv burst into life, with a great picture and sound from the skybox via HDMI.

   

Now over the last couple of years I have equipped the house with an Hitachi 42in plasma, an acura 37in lcd, a bush 28in lcd (which was gifted to me, going wrong just out of guarantee) along with this recent purchase, all for under a hundred pounds,
including repairs

I dont need anymore tv's, but if the chance arises again, it will be hard to resist.

Well I'll be darned, not too hard was it. If my Sony or two small Tosh (19" for a hundred quid if memory serves: how do they do that? ) ever stops I shall have some idea what to do.

Very well done on rescuing the set Paul. Makes you wonder how much of this stuff goes to the local tips. If our tip is anything to go by, a heck of a lot. Stacking hi-fi systems, TVs of every size and description - these days, mostly flat screen too. So cheap nowadays that they've almost become consumable items and are treated as such. (except by the likes of us of course!).

Although they are new and some not terribly good, they have a lot to reccommend them for repair work. No EHT, Easy fault finding in many cases and you can always get them cheap.

Always capacitors - There's nothing new under the sun is there?

Thanks for this, Paul. A potentially very useful thread. You've pinpointed the fault that most of us are probably vaguely aware of but now its much clearer. I too like the hairdryer tip. In the old days I'd have thought of it myself but out of use, out of mind I suppose. Handy also to know about the American restorer's You Tube material.
