First download and install Audacity.
Plug whatever you want to record from into the Line-In socket. This is the blue one - pink is microphone and green is Out. You should be able to hear it playing through the computer's speakers.
Now open Windows' Master Volume Control. If you can't hear anything check the Line-In slider and Mute tick-box. You also use this fader to set the record level.
Open Audacity and press the Record Button in that and Play on whatever you're recording from.
Press Stop when finished. These controls are in the top left corner and are marked with the usual logos.
You can now do any desired editing and then save the recording.
To do this click File then Export and choose the desired format. If it's ultimately going to go on a CD use .WAV
That's about it.
