Networking a Neanderthal.

Can you arrange all three machines to use the same O/S? In my experience, that makes configuring and managing a network one hell of a lot easier.

O.K.; I suspected as much: just had to ask. Can you configure the W98SE machine to run Windows 2000 (with SP4) ? I ask that since XP, Vista and W2000 have a lot more in common (as far as networking goes) than W98SE.

Success! or at least enough to be going on with.

I can now use the XP machine to access either of the others which is plenty good enough and I haven't given up on it yet.

As I said yesterday the whole thing is like fitting wheels to a tomato but then so is messing about with old radios that were obsolete forty years ago.

I've re-read Mark's post #6 while sober. The ping result - Vista to 98se - is below:-

   

After doing that registry hack on the Vista m/c I can access it from '98se but most of the shared items aren't showing up. Progress is being made though. At least if I can't fully access things nobody else should be able to.

Despite playing about with PCs for over twenty years I've never done anything with networking so it's all new and interesting.
