anyone worked on one of these radio/alarm clocks?
Rob kindly got me this in November last year, Just got it out of the cabinet.
Any pointers especially with the clock part.

The radio part is the same as for any radio of this type. Things to watch out for..

12AH8 is not the same as ECH81.
6BJ6 is also one without equivalents.
12AT6 - ditto.
19AQ5 is equivalent to HL90. Nor EL90!!
35W4 is equivalent to HY90.

These are American valve types and an american design, and the HT to the rectifier anode does not go through the transformer. Valves are in series from the auto transformer to chassis..

The clock is the usual type and will need a clean. The switch in the clock can be operated by the clock itself or just switched on. This can be shorted out if necessary, rather like that Philips one I remember.

The chassis is linked to ground via a capacitor, Put a safety type in, Y type.

The usual capacitors will need changing.

reading that I hope the valves are intact, looks like a stinker.

It is a right stinker, the rotary switch causes all sorts of faults on the tuning and the only recourse is a replacement. The rest of the set is a dog as well, they only bit of sanity in the set is the clock.

Having looked at this further, someone has previously replaced the mains cable, bypassing the plug! a right lash up, there is also a wire soldered directly to the tuning cap, I am guessing to act as an aerial. The caps look original so the wiring I would guess dates from the 50's or 60's.

Anyway the clock is separate from the chassis as it has a neat little plug.

I have one of these on the work bench in bits at the moment, awaiting a new rotary switch. As noted above, tuning on MW only works with a wire attached to the ferrite rod which implies that the circuit is suspect. I've changed the micas (of which some were dodgy to say the least) to no effect, the last item is the rotary switch then back on the shelf until I can be bothered to try again. A right nasty model set.
