Terms used for parts of spindles

When you see something like a wooden stair spindle, table lamp, standard lamp or candlestick, you might not realise that the shape of each curve - whether it's deep or shallow, gradual or acute, convex or concave - has a name. The common ones are called 'beads' (convex) and 'coves' (concave), but though you'll almost certainly recognise most if not all of the shapes, you probably won't know what an 'astragal' 'quirk' 'cavetto' or ovolu is. Well, not until now, but if you study the attached diagram you'll know, and you'll be able to bore for Europe telling everyone else, whether they want to know or not!

Hope it's a handy reference for anyone who is into woodturning.
