It looks like a good design and wouldn't be difficult to copy, especially if you've got a router to cut the adjustment slot.

If anyone intends to make such a cradle and wonders what the threaded inserts into which the knobs are screwed are known as, they're called 'Tee Nuts' and are widely available. EG:

...given that it's often a first restoration, as they abound at car boot sales and on t'internet.

Only seen one down here at a boot sale in the last 5 years... and you know what I'm doing to that one !

Cradle is a great idea though... I have one for PCB assembly (allows you to flip the board etc.) but may not be strong enough for a chassis... worth a try

I don't have one but am reliably informed that the little twenty quid jobs are quite good enough.

One wouldn't be essential as you could just drill holes at either end of the slot and then join them up with a coping saw. The result is unlikely to be as neat but on a utilitarian item that probably wouldn't be of great import. The runners on the sides of the outer base would prevent wobbling.
