Well I picked up a Murphy A26 from Tim on the VRRR forum this afternoon, all I have done with it up to now is cut off the mains plug to stop me plugging it in. Remove the chassis from the cabinet and hover out the cabinet and chassis with help from a paint brush.
The radio seems to be heavily built. The cabinet will be sanded and then re varnished, it will need some new speaker cloth as it has a few small holes in it.
A quick look under the chassis and I can see some of the main capacitor sections have been bi-passed with the odd external capacitor strapped in place, so believe i will be removing and repacking the capacitor black with modern caps internally and slowly going though testing/replacing other caps and resistors as required. I am not going to be trying to reform anything. Some of the paper tube may get re-stuffed, it depends on how easy I find it to do. Some of the rubber sleeved wire is very brittle with the insulation falling away at the slightest touch.
Two of the valves (ACTP & ACV1) are missing chunks of the grey screen coating on the outside, so hope to use some Graphit 33 were the coating is missing. Not sure if there would be a better substitute for it? The chassis is in good non rusty condition so will get a clean with some rag and acetone only where required.
One of the knobs is missing the retaining nut, I have found a standard nut that fits and may have a play with some resin to see if I can make a reasonable facsimile for the missing bit.
I do have a puzzle regarding the radio, in the base is a slot that comes in from the side, I would assume this is for the radio's manual, or possibly for a station/frequency chart as the radio just has a basic dial. Could anyone tell me what should go in the slot?
A whenever project, it has survived 86 years so no rush.
Cheers
Adrian
