Cleaning Vynair

Hello folks

Can anyone tell me the best way to clean the Vynair material that was used to cover Ever Ready portables from the 1950s and 60s?
I've just bought a Sky Baronet which is in quite nice condition, although not yet working, but the covering could do with cleaning and I don't want to attack it with anything that might damage it.

All suggestions/advice gratefully received!

Hi.
Probably a mild solution of washing up liquid. It will normally lift all but the most ingrained dirt. I have used stronger cleaners in the past but deep colours like red can be lifted. Like the old adage says "try on an inconspicuous area first"!

Years ago, RS used to do a foam cleanser for this - I don't know if they still do or if it is available anywhere else today.

Hi Terry.
Yes Servisol Foam cleanser, it would shift anything, great stuff indeed. Some of the bathroom cleansers in a trigger spray gun are good but be careful of the ones with bleach as you might just see the colour running off into the sink!!

Car wheel cleaner is pretty good too on both Rexine and the textured fronts of AVO meters.

A very dilute mix of TFR works well.

Thanks guys, for all your helpful replies. I think I'll start with the washing up liquid. Pretty sure my wife has some!

I use bathroom foam cleaner, cautiously.
But beware getting it onto vintage or poorly chromed or gilded plastic parts, It removed what little chrome effect there was on a KB radio I had.
I have also used it on some speaker cloths to good effect. I spray it on, give it a gentle brush with a soft tooth brush, then suck it off with a vacuum cleaner before it drips through.
But Do NOT use it on silk type vintage cloth from the early 1930's
