Lawrence, you're absolutely right, but many can work surprisingly well for audio. Especially if there's no DC flowing through the windings. This is why a mains transformer can be a good emergency replacement output transformer in a push-pull amp but less likely to be OK in a single ended amp.
For the most part we're not talking about hifi, just ordinary radios where a high quality transformer could be overkill.
