Pye 65A Chassis

Hi.
I was given a chassis from a late 40's Pye 65A table radio.
It was covered in the usual corrosion around the battery aperture and was quite grubby.
I decided to just power the chassis up with 2v & 120v which is the recommended supplies.
I connected an aerial and "yes" off it went perfect  
Since then I've de-rusted the bad section cleaned the chassis and changed the wax caps.
Now all I need is a set of knobs, dial glass and a cabinet!

Provided the af Transformers survive they seem to work OK.

I have the 67A which uses the same chassis (different cabinet). In mine, the phase splitter transformer and the output transformer were U/S, and one of the IFT's was high resistance (badly soldered Litz wire).

It does work well.

It makes not a lot difference to Q if some of the strands of Litz are not connected:  they are still there 

I did tests cutting out strands and then found an article by member Alan Douglas who went further than me.  I cant find where it is on the Web at the mo.  Maybe Alan will see this and give a link.  If not I'll search out the radio I restored where it is referenced, cant remember now.

Ah! found it!

Restoration of an HMV 650. I had some high IF coil resistances and these are my tests to see what difference in performance it would make..

"Another junk IFt was found that used three strand wire with a coil resistance of 33 Ohm, which had a measured Q of 41. With one strand cut, at the outer end, the results were 52 Ohm and a Q of 41. Finally with two wires cut the results were 101 Ohm and a Q of 33."

So the conclusion is that a few broken wires are not a disaster. "


"Later, I typed into Goggle “Litz wire broken strands” expecting to get nothing of value. Within minutes I found an article “Litz Wire - The Effect of Broken Strands”, by member Alan Douglas from back in 1997. In the article he gives the percentage reduction in Q for broken strands of 3 and 7 strand wire. It really is quite astonishing that 4 broken strands, in 7 strand wire, only reduced the Q by 10% and the result was the same if the wires were broken at the inner or outer ends of the winding. "

Be  interesting to know what difference in Q is between normal eanmelled copper wire and Litz. I suspect not a lot. I think there's a 'snake oil' aspect to Litz wire, but that's just my subjective view in the absence of any objective comparisons.

The "set" works very well, both driver and output transformers are ok. Short Wave works as it should. If I can obtain a cabinet I'll build an eliminator.

Hi Trevor,
I reckon I could knock up an ersatz cabinet for your Pye 65A. After all it is just a simple box like structure. All that is needed are the dimensions, particularly the inside measurements of the cabinet. Perhaps Alan can help.
