On occasions when I need to measure the current consumption of battery powered equipment that uses 'C' or 'D' cells etc, I use a small 'blade' made from a piece of double-sided PCB with a lead soldered to each side. The blade is pushed between two cells and the leads connected to a milliammeter to read off the current consumption. I don't know how commonplace this technique is, but hopefully, it will be a useful tip for someone or another on the forum who hadn't heard of it before.
