I had never heard of Mahlon Loomis until today...always something new to discover. Found him in the USA census for the 1870's and 1880's listed as an M.D. from what I saw. Lawrence.

Yes, there's no doubt that despite the widely held view to the contrary, Marconi was not the inventor of radio. I mentioned Loomis in the article 'The Creators of Wireless Communication', issue 128, Radio Bygones (Christmas 2010) along with numerous others, all predating Marconi and/or inventing the essential elements of modern-day radio.

There are a number of people who achieved some form of radio communication before Marconi. What Marconi did was make it all into a useful system of communication.
